Teen airlifted to hospital after crash involving car and school bus in Cork

A TEENAGE boy has been rushed to hospital after a collision involving a car and a school bus this afternoon.

The crash happened on the Ballydehob/Schull Road in Cork at around 3pm.

The teen has been airlifted to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

There were no children on the bus at the time.

A garda spokesman said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of a road traffic collision involving a car and a bus that occurred at approximately 1:15pm today, Friday, 23rd October, 2020, at Shanavagh, Ballydehob, County Cork. 

“The driver of the car, a male in his late teens, was taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.

“His condition is currently described as non life threatening.

“The driver of the bus was uninjured. There were no other occupants in either the car or the bus.

“The road is currently closed with local diversions in place. It is expected to reopen shortly.


“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing to any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling between Ballydehob and Schull between 1pm and 1:20pm to make this footage available to Gardaí.Anyone with information is asked to contact Bantry Garda Station on 027 20860, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

AA Roadwatch’s website reads: “The Ballydehob/Schull Rd (R592) is currently down to one lane just outside Ballydehob itself following a collision. Gardaí are at the scene. 

“Emergency services are dealing with a collision on the N20 in Charleville, on the Buttevant side of the town. 

“Traffic is slow on the N25 approaching the Lakeview R/A in Midleton from the city direction.

“There are southbound delays on the Cork Rd heading through Carrigaline.”
