O’Hara has accused his ex of inflicting the 25 stab wounds to her sibling’s body following a family feud over the sale of the Jones family home.

Jones’ barrister Brendan Grehan SC today grilled O’Hara about his violent past which he previously denied.

He admitted: “I had previous for violence ya. But your client murdered her brother. In general I am a quiet man. I was attacked many times before and I defended myself.”

O’Hara admitted he shanked a female in the face and neck outside a Galway pub a few months before Mr Jones was killed. And he was convicted of another assault in Cork, adding: “Yes, I thought I was protecting Helen that night.”

But Mr Grehan pointed out the attacks occurred over many years before he met his ex.

O’Hara admitted to a 2002 incident where a golf club and baseball bat were used in an assault, saying “a fight broke out”. He said: “I did not start that fight. I finished it.”

And O’Hara, who was convicted of wounding with intent to cause grievous harm in England, added: “I was the victim of many assaults.”

Mr Grehan accused O’Hara of “tailoring the account of what happened in Paul Jones’ home”, adding: “There is only one murderer in this court and it’s not Helen Jones.”

He continued: “You are the violent psychopath there that night. You are the one who killed Paul Jones that night.

“You are bitter because you are no longer with her. It is never your fault.”

O’Hara and Jones, both of Mayfield, Cork, deny murder.

The trial at Cork’s Central Criminal Court continues.
