Footage of a Smyth’s store queue in Athlone was shared on social media – while fellow users shared footage of queues outside stores in Kinsale, Cork and Dublin.

The rush also comes as Smyths released their Smyths Toys’ Top 10 Christmas Toys list today.

The toy superstore share what they predict to be the top-selling toys of Christmas every year – and the items fly off the shelves as soon as the list is made public.

This years list features some old classics – such as Pokemon, Star Wars, Monopoly and Barbie – but, there are also more modern toys on the list.

It comes as party leaders today met with the Chief Medical Officer to discuss NPHET recommending the entire country moves to Level 5 restrictions.

The group, chaired by CMO Dr Tony Holohan, held an emergency meeting last night to discuss spiking Covid-19 cases around the country.

However, the Government is reportedly set to veto NPHET’s advice and instead move every county to Level 3 – with greater enforcement of Level 3 restrictions.
